Mindset is the thing!
- The Strategist gives their managers the tools to do the job, whilst they plan for the future
- The Meddler can’t let go of routine tasks. The growth capacity of the firm is limited until they do let go: staff get hired but are not empowered and the boss doesn’t make time to plan
- The Hero usually heads up operations, sales or design. They are the only person who really understands management policies and systems – so they often ‘come to the rescue’
- The Technician/Artisan is typified by low management activity. Most of their time is spent delivering. They often remain ‘one of the gang’, with little authority. Future planning hardly happens.
- Have you got the skills to take the agency to the next level? Do you really want to?
- Are you building to sell or building to scale or building to create a legacy? Or just running an agency to pay the mortgage?
- Are you willing to make the tough decisions? If not, then why not?
- Is now the right time? If not now, then when?
For me, the key issue is mindset.
No amount of tools, techniques and strategies will work if you have the wrong mindset.
Too many agency creatives do not have the right mindset. They are too focused on working in the business or they are too preoccupied with petty political debates with clients or staff, or maybe they just don’t think big enough. Others don’t feel worthy, while others simply create a business around their own self-limiting beliefs.
